Puppy & Dog Training

Training Methods

All puppy and dog training classes that Ros Freeman Dog Training organises and runs are based on positive, reward based methods of training and the key to successful puppy and dog training is to ensure that we reinforce our puppy's or dog's behaviour. This can either be through using a 'marker word' such as "YES" or by using a clicker.

Puppies and dogs learn through association, ie. 'I did this, so my consequence was...'. It is vital when training with our puppies and dogs that we provide instant feedback to them when they are performing a behaviour that we want to encourage.

For all our courses Ros believes that by using force free, kind and 'reward based' training it allows us to educate our dogs and provides them with the opportunity to learn essential life skills. It also means that we are giving them more choice and responsibility over their own behaviour and means that we end up with dogs who behave because they want to, NOT because they are forced to.

In the photograph you can see Bailey who gained her 'masters' degree Certificate and Rosette by working hard in her puppy socialisation course, and his follow-on junior obedience course with Ros Freeman Dog Training. Well done Bailey from everybody at Ros Freeman Dog Training, we look forward to seeing you some of our other courses such as heel work to music and agility.

Clicker Dog Training Classes & Clicker Training for the Individual

puppy training classes Gosport Hampshire
The clicker is a neutral, simple and clear form of communication between us and our puppies and dogs. The sound of the clicker when introduced appropriately will tell our dogs the same thing each time - that they have made the right choice and they will be rewarded.

Ros Freeman Dog Training welcomes owners who wish to use the clicker training within their training classes, or 1-2-1 sessions. However, it is not a requirement and successful training can be achieved by using a consistent "marker" word.

clicker dog training Hampshire and The Isle of Wight
Here are some of the common questions owners ask me about introducing the "Clicker", all of which Ros is happy to explain, train and build on.

  • How do we clicker train?
  • What does the clicker mean?
  • Why do we have to "tune" the dog into the clicker?
  • How do we make an association between the clicker sound and food?
  • Timing of the "clicker" sound is very important - learn how to use the Clicker!
  • What does reinforcement mean?
  • Do I use the Clicker to get my dog's attention (do you know the answer)?
  • Can I shape my dog's behaviour by using the "clicker"
  • Should I use the "clicker" for my recall training?

For those owners who wish to use a clicker and would like individual clicker training then please contact us for more information.
