All puppy and dog training classes that Ros Freeman Dog Training organise and run are based on positive, reward based methods of training
and the key to successful puppy and dog training is to ensure that we reinforce our puppy's or dog's behaviour. This can either be through using
a 'marker word'
such as "YES" or by using a clicker.
Puppies and dogs learn through association, ie. 'I did this, so my consequence was...'. It is vital when training with our puppies and dogs that we provide instant feedback to them when they are performing a behaviour that we want to encourage.
Ros Freeman Dog Training welcomes owners who wish to use the clicker training within all of our puppy and dog training courses. However, this is not a requirement and successful training can be achieved by using a consistent 'marker' word.
The clicker is a neutral, simple and clear form of communication between us and our puppies and dogs. The sound of the clicker when introduced appropriately will tell our dogs the same thing each time - that they have made the right choice and they will be rewarded.
For those owners who wish to use a clicker and would like individual clicker training then please contact us for more information.

Well done Bailey from everybody at Ros Freeman Dog Training, we look forward to seeing you some of our other courses such as heel work to music and agility.

It is very important that all puppies are given the opportunity to develop into happy and well balanced dogs.
To achieve this it is essential that your puppy training begins as early as possible - we recommend that puppies start their training from 8 weeks of age
(subject to the innoculation program your vet has recommended).
Very quickly puppies mature and learn new behaviours (sometimes not the ones we want) and it can be more difficult to train puppies in later life.
It is far easier and more effective to teach your puppy the appropriate behaviour and to prevent behavioural problems developing as they mature.
Early puppy training can either be done by attending our Puppy Socialisation Course,
or booking a Puppy Home Start for owners who are unable to attend puppy classes or for
those who just prefer 1-1 Training Private Sessions.
For the new puppy owners who are considering getting a new puppy, or have a puppy due to come home - then our Pre-Puppy Course (without puppy) would help you plan and organise the arrival of your new puppy to your home and family.
Our Puppy Socialisation and Confidence Building Classes are run by Ros in Gosport and are for puppies up to the age of 16 weeks. The aim of the Puppy Socialisation Classes is to provide you and your puppy an opportunity to socialise in a safe, educational environment, and to learn about all aspects of owning a puppy and to lay down a foundation for education and training.
Our Puppy Junior Obedience Training Classes are for puppies up to the age of 6 months. Puppies tend to learn on a gradual basis, over period of time. This way a puppy will have time to settle into a new class and the environment, and gradually without fear or force build up solid training foundations for the future. This course focuses on teaching self-control, and important everyday life skills.
Our Adult Beginner's Dog Training Courses are for dogs over the age of 6 months. The aim of the Adult Beginner Dog Training Classes is to educate owners and help them to understand their dog - in order to teach their dog self-control and extend their social skills. The adult dog training classes focus on each dog learning to control their behaviour and to understand what is being asked of them - even when the situation or environment is distracting them.
For all our courses, ranging from puppy through to adult (and agility), we believe that by using force free, kind and 'reward based' training it allows us to educate our dogs and provides them with the opportunity to learn essential life skills. It also means that we are giving them more choice and responsibility over their own behaviour and means that we end up with dogs who behave because they want to, NOT because they are forced to.
We offer Clicker Training Classes - dogs learn through association, ie. 'I did this and there was a consequence'. Whether you choose to use a clicker to mark your dog's behaviour, or you choose to use a 'marker' word, both can and will be trained and taught in your chosen course.
Our puppy, junior and adult dog training courses are supported each week with a puppy topical or training handout and we offer full support to owners for 4 weeks following their course attendance via telephone, email or text. Our friendly classes are kept small to ensure that all owners and their puppies/dogs get as much help, advice and support as they need throughout their particular course.

These sessions are ideal for tackling a specific aspect of dog training that you are finding difficult, in the environment that you are experiencing the problems.
You have the option to start your training with low level distractions and work in our private fenced field in Alverstoke, Gosport, building on the training and,
once you and your dog reach a certain level of confidence & training, we are then able to go out and about and start to introduce your puppy / dog to
the 'real-world', with all the everyday distractions around them, ie. dogs, cyclists, children, joggers, and in particular work on the initial problem
that your dog found difficult in certain environments or situations.
To continue with your puppy's training you have the opportunity to hire our fenced field to continue and work with your puppy / dog in a non-distracting environment.
The Puppy Home Start visit is a puppy training service Ros Freeman Dog Training offers in Gosport, Fareham and surrounding Hampshire area.
It is designed to provide owners with all the information and advice that they will need to ensure their puppy develops into a happy, friendly and sociable dog.
By understanding how your puppy thinks and by providing them with consistent and clear guidelines for their behaviour, you will help to prevent behaviour problems developing later in their life.
A Puppy Home Start visit is done in pet owners own home, and so it is ideal for young puppies that have not yet had their first vaccination and means that owners can begin puppy training straight away.
A Puppy Home Start is also beneficial for owners who are unable to come along to puppy training classes.
Because owners will vary in their level of experience in owning a puppy, Ros will tailor each Puppy Home Start visit to suit the individual needs
of owners and following the visit Ros will prepare a personalised puppy training handouts designed to provide owners with a step by step puppy
training guide on the areas discussed at the home start. Additional training can also be provided to continue ensure owners continue
to feel supported with puppy training.
Typical topics covered within a Puppy Home Start visit include, housetraining, socialisation, teaching bite inhibition, understanding how dogs learn, teaching self-control, how to prevent separation issues developing, general puppy training & how to prevent problem behaviours developing.
Owning a pet should be fun and an enjoyable experience for the whole family. However there are times when some aspects of your pet's
behaviour may become problematic and difficult to control.
Perhaps you have just taken on a rescue dog or pet and would like some extra support and advice on how to work on a certain aspect of the behaviour. Perhaps a change in circumstances has meant that your pet is finding hard to cope.
If so, why not consider a Pet Behaviour visit with our in-house Pet Behaviourist Emma (PGDip - Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling , Bsc (Hons) - Psychology) to help you work with the problem dog, cat or small animal
Some examples of the types of problems that may be dealt with during a pet behaviour visit may be seen below.
The pet behaviour visits are generally held in owner's home and/or in the location in which the problem behaviour occurs. We cover Gosport,
Fareham and surrounding ares in Hampshire for pet behavioural visits.
The length of time that a Pet Behaviour visit lasts is dependent on the type of behavioural problem; however we usually suggests to owners to allow approximately 2 hours for the visit.
Our aim during the Pet Behaviour visit is to explore the possible reasons WHY the problem behaviour is happening and this involves taking a full and detailed history of your pet and the specific behaviour problem. We will also observe your pet 's behaviour in general and in relation to the specific behaviour problem (with dog's this may involve walking to your local park or travelling in the car etc., dependent on the specific problem and the environment it occurs in.
During this visit, as well as making sure owners fully understand their pet's behaviour, we will also work with you on the practical skills needed to help train your pet. This ensures that owners feel confidant to follow the treatment plan after the behaviour visit.
It is important to recognise that the problem behaviour in most cases did not occur overnight so it will take time to work
and improve your pet's
behaviour. Some trainer's methods may often use punishment or aversive methods and produce quick results which look effective during a consultation.
However, for many people, these methods are unethical and ineffective in the long term, and are likely to affect your relationship with your pet.
Forceful methods are also likely to cause pain and distress to your dog and can cause the behaviour problem to intensify (especially in cases of fear
Behaviour modification using reward based training can still produce fast results with your pet, but is not aimed to be a 'quick fix'. For training to be successful there needs to be a lot of effort from the owners before improvements in their pets behaviour can be seen, however the change is likely to be long term.
For many behaviour problems, there may be a medical issue that is causing or contributing towards a behaviour problem and so Ros Freeman Dog Training will work closely with your own vet to ensure that this is ruled out prior to training beginning.
After the pet behaviour visit, a comprehensive and detailed written report will be sent out (via email) The behaviour report provides a summary of
the behaviour problem and details the exercises and training techniques to follow, in order to modify your pet's behaviour. The behaviour visit
report can take in excess of three hours for us to write and the cost of this is included in your initial consultation fee. A copy of the report
will also be sent to your Vet (unless you request otherwise).
Depending on the severity of the problem, sometimes it may be necessary to only have one pet behaviour visit and follow up support will be provided via the telephone and/or email, to ensure that training is progressing well. We do encourage owners to keep in regular contact and to inform us immediately if they have any questions or feel that there has been a change in their pet's behaviour.
For other owners, they prefer to have continued support, either through further consultation visits, one to one training or by attending our dog training classes. Ros Freeman Dog Training operates in Gosport, Lee on the Solent, Stubbington, Fareham, Portsmouth and will also travel throughout Hampshire, Dorset and West Sussex for Pet Behavioural Consultations or 1 to 1 dog training.
"As an owner of a pug I wanted my puppy to have the best start in his training life and Ros Freeman Dog Training most certainly provided that and more.
Ros and her team were patient, friendly, knowledgeable and consistent.
Not only were the training sessions brilliant for my puppy, I got to meet other dog owners and my dog got to socialize with other pups in a safe environment.
The aftercare was just as impressive with Ros and the team on hand if you ever had any questions, there were follow up emails after each training
session combined with leaflets and information. Top class training for any puppy.
Amazing, I would recommend this 10 out of 10 service to anyone.
Thanks again, its people like you that make a difference in our pets lives."

"We have just completed the 8 week junior course with Ros Freeman Dog Training with our Springer Spaniel Puppy Brook, we are thrilled with the results, as you can
imagine a springer spaniel is a very lively dog and we were certain we would need to find the right course for her.
We would highly recommend Ros Freeman Dog Training to any owner with any type of dog, Ros is so easy going and supportive you will not be disappointed!
We also had a puppy home start visit where Emma (Ros's daughter and qualified behaviourist) came to our home and gave us the much needed advice to help
us to understand our puppy and help her settle in, this was a very valuable visit and helped us with the basics until we started the course.
Ros is not just there for you during the class, she extends her advice and expertise to you at any time should you need it, We called upon her many times outside of the class and she is always happy to help in any way she can. We plan to go on to do the advanced training and agility with Ros Freeman Dog Training and are very much looking forward to it as will Brook. We are sad that our junior course has ended and will miss Ros and all the other great people we met and shared the class with (for now anyway until the next course begins)!"

"We have been really pleased with the progress Toffee has made through attending the Junior Class Dog Training with Ros Freeman Dog Training.
Attending the classes has really improved my confidence and knowledge in handling our dog Toffee a West Highland Terrier;
her greatest achievements are being now 'off lead' securely and her 'down'. The e-mailed weekly handouts have been really helpful
and have enabled me to go back to something when I've been unsure.
Ros' e-mail support has been invaluable in ensuring Toffee has been successful in her training. "

"We have just completed a 7 week junior training course with our cocker spaniel puppy, Bella, and have really enjoyed it all!
The training programme covered all we were hoping for, in a very professional yet personal way with lots of information and explanation.
Ros was always prepared to help with any concerns we, as owners, had about our training efforts. The most important message being to practice
with love, fun, consistency and patience! We continue to enjoy training with Bella and she is becoming a joy to be with. It's been challenging
at times but very rewarding.
Thank you Ros,"

"After my husband and step son arrived home with smiles ear to ear holding our new addition to our family, a ten week old lively, very energetic, naughty,
chewing everything in sight, gorgeous pug. I knew I would need to seek professional help and guidance.
I was delighted when finding on the internet 'Ros Freeman Dog Training' I was impressed reading about all the services they have to offer the public and I remember thinking
thank goodness, there seems to be a light at the end of this tunnel.
I enrolled straight away on 'The Eight Week Junior Dog Training Course' which now I have successfully completed.
On completing this course, home life is again tranquil (as we have cats too). We have gained a better behaved, obedient, cheerful pug. I feel I have gained the
skills and confidence that when out walking my pug he is able to meet and greet other pets and all ages of people.
I will say, all of this does not come as easy as waving a magic wand. You do have to practise and learn what is shown in the lessons to see the best rewarding results.
Our time spent attending 'The eight week junior training course' was enjoyable, entertaining and very interesting. I would highly recommend Ros at Ros Freeman Dog Training to
anyone on my travels.
Aside from The Dog Training Classes, Ros offers many services. One service is a Dog Home Boarding Service. After meeting Ros and Dave through attending the junior classes I was elated when they both agreed to care for our pug while we were on holiday. Our Pug stayed in their home and was treated like one of their family. I was able to enjoy myself having peace of mind he was in very good hands.
I just want to say a big thank you Ros of Ros Freeman Dog Training. I will continue to use your services and recommend you to all walks of life. Smile, wink and Giggle x"

"Me, my other half and our Basset Hound Dotty attended the puppy training classes with Ros Freeman Dog Training at Hedca. We all really benefited from all the
help and guidance we received from Ros and if we had any problems Ros was always happy to help either on the phone or by email. We found all the
lessons easy to follow and had lots of tips to help us. Dotty was a little bit over the top with some dogs but with Ros's help she is now a very happy sociable
little pup. Going to the classes each week gave us the confidence to train Dotty and seeing the improvement in her was amazing. Thank you Ros Freeman Dog Training!!!"
